Kayaking Pool Lessons in Hood River                                                                                                        

First Timer class teaches you everything from fitting a kayak to basic strokes and prepares you to learn the eskimo roll. The techniques covered in this class are basic kayak safety, wet exits, maneuvering, strokes, edging, bracing, and rolling. We try to allow students to progress rapidly through the first class to develop a full understanding of what it takes to become a proficient kayaker.

Roll Class- Learn the proper technique to right your kayak when you flip over. Our experienced instructors will help you understand the important components of the "Eskimo Roll" which will help you become successful and confident in any kayaking situation. You will also learn the bow rescue, which allows you to practice your roll later on with a friend.



Cost:
$40 individual       $32 sign up with 3 or more
Times: Tues or Thurs - 4:45 - 6:30 pm
Place: Meet at our shop for gear fitting 4:45
Includes
: Kayak, paddle, spray skirt, and an experienced instructor.

*What to bring:
• Pool Fee: $6 Cash or Check Payable at the front desk of the HR Aquatic Center.
• Bathing suit and/or swim trunks, towel.
•Optional: Ear plugs, nose plugs, swim goggles, and a warm, synthetic, long-sleeve top.

Pool Progression in Hood River                                                                                                           

1st session:
This class is the introduction to the basics of whitewater kayaking. We will teach you wet exits, some fundamental paddle strokes for controlling your boat and learn how to swim your gear to shore. Also carving the kayak around turns, and preparing skills for the rapids. After this class you will be comfortable paddling around in any type of kayak and ready to develop your skills further.

2nd session:
Learn to control your kayak and become an efficient kayaker. Sea, recreational, and whitewater kayakers will benefit from the time spent in this class. Bracing is a technique that requires a lot of practice but when done correctly, can keep a kayakers hair dry for many river trips to come. The high and low braces are the best defenses against being flipped over. We will show you how to help your friends if they flip over with the Bow Rescue Technique. If you pick up the basic skills quickly, we can start getting you ready for the eskimo roll.

3rd session:

Time: 5:15 - 6:30 pm, Meets Tuesday, Thursday, and following Tuesday.
First day we meet at the Kayak Shed at 4:45 for gear fitting.
